"LUMINEX-LA: Dialogues of Light" curated by @nowart_la featuring the work of @refikanadol, @nancybakercahill, @raraspeaks, @shinealighton, and @akikoyamashita3d.
I refer to this piece as an ephemeral monument to the moment. Pairing "ephemeral" with "monument" points to an intention that can embrace both the humble/vulnerable and the collectively meaningful. It felt significant that it was my first time stepping out to do a large scale public art piece since the beginning of the pandemic. Likewise, for the performers and many people who attended this event it was their first time stepping out in fair numbers as well. There were so many layers to this durational installation. Live music, dance, visuals, words and image from the community produced an ever-evolving weave addressing the questions: Where are we now? How do we emerge from this period of isolation? How do we learn from it? rebuild for the better? I was deeply moved by the attentive atmosphere and engagement in the space. I, personally, am in search of new ways of thinking, envisioning. Starting with these questions can point to new possibilities.

“A void A void" - Morrison Hotel
4 hr durational performance

dance: Oguri, Michelle Shiu-lin Lai
sound: Carmina Escobar, Jorge Martin, Eli Rosenkim
camera: Theo Rasmussen
community text participation collage: Alicia Gorecki, Reid Gorecki
